Talk & extend...We continued to work on patterning problems today. We discussed strategies that not only would help us to solve the problem but also to share our mathematical thinking in a clear and organized way. Share with your families the strategies that help you solve patterning problems and why they are most successful for you.

Our day...We went to gym and played four-corners. So how you played it, was one person was in the middle and there was 4 corners. A group would go to one corner and another group would go to another corner. The person in the middle would say a number and if that was your corner, then you went to the middle of the gym. BA Today we had a practice fire drill and we had to line up on the field even though we were freezing. PBK Whenever I walked around one of the fire alarms, my ears started vibrating. BM Today for exploration we went to the project center. It was very very fun. SAS Izak and me built a domino tower that didn't turn out so well so we made a humungous diving board tower. KSB Talk & Extend...Explain the Robot Stepper problem to your family. Choose a robot stepper to pattern and create a number line with your family. Find patterns with your family. Do you and other members of your family notice the same patterns?
Reminders...Playground News... With the opening of the new playground, families need to be aware there are going to be some different supervision and playground usage expectations implemented immediately. The City of Calgary ‘small’ play park will NO LONGER be used by EHS students before or during school hours and supervision will NOT be offered for the small play park area anytime. Beginning at 8:10 am, there will be a teacher supervisor assigned to the playground area AND student use will be restricted to particular classes on specific days to ensure numbers of students on the equipment are reasonable for safety during school hours. Over the lunch hour, from 11:45 am – 12:10 pm, there will be a Lunchroom Supervisor assigned to supervise registered lunchroom students. A teacher supervisor will also be on the playground beginning at 11:55 am – 12:10 pm to help out with returning students who go home for lunch – again, adhering to the assigned classes schedule (below). AFTER SCHOOL, BEGINNING AT 3:00 PM, THERE WILL BE NO TEACHER SUPERVISION ON THE SCHOOL PLAYGROUND AND NO SCHEDULE TO FOLLOW. Children playing on the playground after school will need to be supervised by parents or guardians and the STEM Before/After School Program will also be using the playground, providing their own supervisors. Here is the ‘Students on the Playground During School & Supervision Times” schedule that will go into effect October 25, 2017: AM Kindergarten students are welcome to use the playground with adult supervision 11:15 – 11;45 am while the Gr. 1 – 4 students are eating lunch. PM Kindergarten students are welcome to use the playground after school with adult supervision too! Friday mornings are designated Kindergarten only play times. CHILDREN ARE EXPECTED TO PLAY SAFELY AND PEACEFULLY, RESPECTING EACH OTHER AT ALL TIMES ON THE PLAYGROUND. A note about Halloween....There is a lot going on at our school at the end of October this year! The School Council's Special Event BRICKS 4 KIDZ is taking place on Thursday, October 26, 5:30 - 8:00 pm, and our Playground Grand Opening Celebration, also sponsored by the School Council, is happening on Friday, October 27, beginning at 2:00 pm. Halloween occurs on Tuesday, October 31 and we are going to try and honour the fun of the celebration while keeping things a bit low key since we are so busy already! Students are invited to wear their costumes all day on Tuesday if they choose, with a couple of restrictions - no masks or weapons, please, and we would ask that face paint be kept to a minimum during the school day so it does not interfere with the children's learning. There will be no whole school event to recognize Halloween as we are certain children will be looking forward to engaging with their families in all the trick or treating events that evening. Classrooms will include some Halloween-themed activities through the day as the teachers and students feel appropriate to their classroom. The fun and excitement of Halloween is something the school is happy to celebrate and share with our students in the context of learning and building peaceful communities together. Looks like next week might be just a little calmer than this week as we say good-bye to October and acknowledge another celebration of costumes, fun and trick-or-treating! Our day...

Reminders...TERRY FOX WEEK Dear Parents and Guardians, Today begins our Terry Fox Week. Our school has decided on a goal of raising $4000 for the Terry Fox School Run. All monies raised through pledges, donations and the money raised through our Terry Fox Fun Snack will be donated in memory of Greta Marofke. Each student was given a pledge form to take home today. All pledge forms and donations can be brought back to school by Friday, October 27. *** All cheques must be made out to the Terry Fox Foundation. Our school run will take place on Friday, October 20th . We will have a warm up assembly at 8:30 am with the run beginning by 9:00. The theme of our run will be “Capes and Tiaras.” We encourage students to dress up as a super hero, wear a cape or a tiara to honour our own Tuscany hero, Greta. Parents who would like to volunteer for our run can do so on Sign Up Genius. Eric Harvie School Supports Jacket Racket! The Grade 4 Peace Ambassadors from Eric Harvie will be starting a drive for Jacket Racket beginning Monday, October 23th and running to Friday, Nov. 3rd. This is a wonderful opportunity for all students to help other children here in our city, by donating warm outerwear that they no longer need. It is a valuable experience for our students and reinforces our school’s commitment to peace and citizenship education. Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization that collects and provides warm coats, snow pants, hats and mittens to students who need them. Every year from mid-October to the end of November, Jacket Racket volunteers collect approximately 4,000 gently used coats, which are cleaned, sorted and distributed to children in need through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. Many Jacket Racket volunteers are former CBE teachers who have seen shivering students come and go from school wearing little to no protection from the cold. There has been an increasing demand for warm clothing in past years. Despite this growing demand, Jacket Racket has been successful in filling it with the help of the generosity of people like our families. HOW CAN I HELP? Please take some time with your children to go through their winter items. It is that time of year when we all realize that hats, mittens, boots, snow pants and coats have been outgrown! Please give them a wash and put them in a plastic bag to be brought to school. If you could list the items and sizes on the outside of the bag, it would help the students with the sorting process! We also accept adult sizes, as many older students need help to stay warm in the winter as well! Thank you for your support of our project! The Staff and Students of Eric Harvie School Our day in our words...
