Our Live Webcast was a Success!Kids meet the Prairies with A Kid'sGuide to Canada was an honour to be a part of. We are grateful for the opportunity. Our learning curve was high on this project! We explored how to do a live green screen webcast and found success! Thank you to the teachers that assisted us in the process. Lots of exploration and discovery. Our presentation on the video begins at 26 min through the video. The students tell a story of the coulee and share some facts along the way! We hope you enjoy the show! We also had the opportunity to participate in a Q & A session at the end!

Working together...Students partnered up with the am kindergarten class to assist them in building their creations for the beakerhead ingenuity challenge. It was a great leadership opportunity for students in our class to work with kindergarten buddies. What's the rule?Updates...A green lunch hour sport club form was sent home today. The club is for grade 3/4 students only right now. Please return the forms as soon as you can and no later than November 30, 2017 if your child would like to participate. Plant ObservationsWe were very excited to observe the changes in our plants today. Some students had to replant because their seeds were not growing either due to being watered too much or planted in soil that was packed too tight. We learned that too much water isn't ideal for growing, and that soil that is packed too tight can hinder the shoot from sprouting. We also spent our Daily 5 read to self time, reading to our plants! Patterns, Patterns, PatternsWe shared our increasing patterns with the class today. Students worked in groups to create increasing sound patterns. They recorded them on ipads and we were able to compare patterns by watching them together and discussing pattern elements. Students went on to create number patterns, challenging one another to guess the missing numbers. Beakerhead Ingenuity ChallengeIt was an exciting day at EHS as we embraced the design thinking process today. Students were challenged to create something based on the prompt: "There must be a better way!" Students worked in mixed groups from grades 1-4 in various classrooms around the school. Ask your child what they created and have him/her reflect on his/her successes, challenges and what he/she would do differently next time.
Some of our inventions included: I created a jack in the box that when you crank it, it goes down and hits the ground and makes a thud - it's like a reverse jack-in-the-box - Jaxon I made a castle with a bunny that flies to space. It gives animals a chance to explore space - Hannah I created a wake-up machine. There's a gigantic tube, and a box that you put your head in, and the tube is connected to beep the sound into. There's a hammer on the other side that you can whack it to make the sound to wake someone up - Troy My group created an umbrella that you attach to your waistband with a phone attached to a hinge. So now, you don't get wet and neither does your phone - Charlotte My question was: There must be a better way to survive in the wilderness. We made a shelter and a fire and a little thing with lots of suspension - we made it into a military crate that could be used in case of emergency - Lukan I created a table that you can charge your electronics - one side is electrical and the other side is a normal table and there is an off/on switch on the side - Ena We built an eco-friendly dress, so when it's too small for you, you can recycle it and we made a helmet that had a face on the front that is also eco-friendly. We created a fashion line called, Eco Fashion Line - Samantha and Anneliese Updates...
We were plant detectives today!
Updates...We are headed to the ZOO tomorrow! Please dress for the weather. Lights, Camera, Action...We practiced presenting our story about the coulee LIVE today and got to meet the other participants in "A Kids Guide to Canada." We had the opportunity to test out the technology and fine tune our presentation. There must be a better way...Students were introduced to this year's Beakerhead project. On Friday we will be having a 2 hour blitz to create a prototype. The theme this year is - "there must be a better way!" The challenge is to create something that can improve something. The main material we were provided with this year is cardboard - other materials may be added. Students will be working in assigned multi-aged groups to work on this project. A plant by any other name...Students named their plants today and began journalling the changes they have observed, and writing questions they have about their plants. They watched an informative video about how a seed begins to grow. Here are some of things students learned: I learned that the little baby plant is called an embryo – Troy I learned that the part that grows up is called a shoot – Charlotte I learned that no matter how the seed is shaped or where it is the roots always go down and the shoot always goes down -Samantha The food inside of the seed is called endosperm – Jonny I learned a lot of new words – Kenna I learned that there’s a little seed inside and it has small parts of it that snatch the food – Anneliese I looked at my apples at lunch time and I saw the seed and I opened the seed up and saw the endosperm – Hannah I thought that the seed was just one thing that sprouted, I learned that it is made out of 3 different parts – the seed coat, the embryo and the endosperm – Kenna I took the shell off of my seed and it is pure, sticky white, and the seeds in the cups are actually growing roots - Ena Updates...Our zoo field trip is on Thursday, November 23, 2017 Calgary Philharmonic OrchestraWhat a great morning. We were thrilled to be able to experience the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra live! We learned about different instrument families, the baseline, harmony, rhythm, and about different composers. We were most definitely moved by the beautiful music! A Kids' Guide to CanadaWe practiced telling the story of the coulee in front of the green screen today. The backdrop were the pictures students took while out on coulee walks from the fall. It looked really cool - like we were actually standing in the coulee!! Updates...We have an exciting week!
Creating and Extending Patterns...Students explored creating and extending increasing patterns today using manipulatives. Students are learning how to create, identify and describe and extend patterns. Writing like a ScientistStudents were given a field journal to personalize today. They will be recording plant observations in this book. Students also learned a new writing strategy -to write like a scientist! Updates...You can set a link to your home page to our blog.
Needs of PlantsWe continued to develop our definitions of what makes a plant a plant and then started discussing what plants need for survival. Ask your child to tell you (there are 5!). Students were challenged to think deeply about how each of the plant needs helps the plant survive. Looking for patterns...
