Our final Monday!
We spent the day finishing up some special projects we have been working on. In the morning students painted their Coulee Clay beads with Olive Oil. We will use these for story telling tomorrow. In the afternoon we spent our time in the makerspace creating our machines to move a rock. Everyone put in a fabulous effort and we saw much evidence of simple machines within our more complex creations. Reminders: Tomorrow is Sports Day. Please come dressed for the weather, (hats, sunscreen are recommended). Today we watched the movie Robots and looked for examples of Simple Machines that we have been studying in Science. We recorded our observations in our journals and made some interesting connections. We are finishing up our Coulee Stories and look forward to telling our stories using our clay story beads.
Tomorrow is our final Peace Assembly of the year. The grade 4's will besotting the assembly, particularly the Peace Ambassadors and the Eco Club! Following the assembly, there will be a small celebration for grade 4s and their parents. The assembly starts at 10:30 am. Report Cards come home tomorrow! Dear Eric Harvie Community, Right to Play is a global organization that reaches out to developing communities all over the world to empower and educate youth through play and games. Through the power of play, children grow to be adults that drive positive social and economic change in their communities. Our Peace Ambassadors and grade 3/4 classes had the opportunity earlier in the year to learn about Right to Play and learn some games that the Peace Ambassadors will in turn teach to our entire school community during Sports Day. We would like to encourage all students to bring a Toonie to support Right to Play in continuing its amazing work of teaching children all over the world (including us at Eric Harvie!) to make a difference. We will be collecting Toonies until the end of the school year. We hope you will help us out! Mr. Kelly's group went t9 Reader Rock Garden. It was a beautiful day! And so interesting! Did you know that Thomas Quirk has the only above ground grave site in Union Cemetery. He was a dentist who promised painless dental visits and was the first dentist to keep records. Sadly, he was involved in an accident with a horse and carriage. He was a young man in his early thirties. Years later someone broke into hie crypt and stole his skull and thanks to the dental records that Thomas kept police were able to identify his skull while investigating a suspect of another crime. Albert and Vera Dick were survived the sinking of the Titanic. Mrs. Zwack/Mrs. Bates class had the pleasure of hearing a story from Mrs. Kinsman this morning and exploring books in the learning commons. They glued some things into their visual journals and had gym outside.
In the afternoon we explored fractions using our fraction kits and a story. We also had some fun exploring animation! Reminders: If you would like Menchie's Yogurt for Sports Day you need to order on Healthy Hunger by tomorrow. Mrs. Zwack & Mrs. Bates class went to Reader Rock Garden today. Some highlights of our trip: -We explored the cemetery and learned about the legacy of some important people to Calgary -If a tombstone has a lamb on it it was a child or the persons parents were still alive when they died -A tombstone with a maple leaf means they fought in the War -We had a tour of Reader Rock Garden, the founder of the Garden was William Ronald Reader -We learned that the pathway in the rock garden was made of a collection of old rocks gifted to Mr. Reader -The plants were brought to Calgary by William Reader, he experimented with different plants to see if they might survive in Calgary -We became tour guides in the Cemetery and presented on famous Calgarians to the class -We learned about animals habitats and what might naturally need to be in a park -We created our own park on the whiteboard in the Reader Rock Garden classroom Mr. Kelly's class made pictures on the iPads to practice drawing. They also played math games. The Grade 4's went to Coulee Fest at TMC. Highlights of this trip was visiting stations about food. There were stands with activities and trying samples of foods that they made in CTF. We added some of our learning items to our visual journals in preparation for the end of the year. Important: Mr. Kelly's class will be going to Reader Rock Garden tomorrow. Please come dressed for the weather with a lunch in your backpack. You must have returned your field trip form and initialed the date change page. Wow! This is our second last Monday of the school year! How did we get to this day so quickly?
Morgan shared with us how she saved a baby dear this weekend. She brought a photo to show us the sweet baby! Thanks for looking out for the creatures in our community Morgan! This morning we learned the recipe for a Satisfying or Extended ending for story writing. We want our stories, that we have worked so hard on, to come to an ending that makes sense and leaves us feeling like we truly enjoyed the tale. It is like putting a bow on a nicely wrapped present! The four ingredients include: SATISFYING ENDING Memory, Feeling, Wish/Hope, Decisions We learned some actions to help us remember these key ingredients. Please show these to your parents and explain what they each mean. We will be writing our own satisfying endings for our coucoulee stories! Ewa joined us today to discuss the firing of our clay stay beads! We learned a bit about how our clay will be fired and hope our beads turn out well. We will check on them tomorrow! This afternoon we started with a mindful practice to get us in the learning zone for the afternoon. This was followed by Daily 5. Mrs. Bates/Mrs. Zwack's class went to music while Mr. Kelly's class continued to do Daily 5. In math we made fraction kits which we will use for the rest of the week. We finished the day with some time to work on our simple machine challenge blueprints. Important Information Mrs. Bates/Mrs. Zwack's class will be going to Reader Rock Garden tomorrow. Please dress for the weather and pack a hearty lunch. The Grade 4's from Mr. Kelly's class will walk down to TMC tomorrow afternoon for Coulee Fest. This is another opportunity for a visit to TMC before next year! Be prepared for a short walk in the afternoon. Grade 3's will stay back and join the other grade 3 classes for the afternoon. Mr. Kelly's class -- please return your field trip forms and new date document initialed. Happy Friday!
This morning we wrapped up our HS for grade 4's! There is a homework sheet to finish. Students are encouraged to continue discussions with parents. We are getting close to the end of our story writing and on Monday we will learn how to "put bow" on our stories to create a satisfying ending. Ewa will be hear to help us with our story beads. Important: Mr. Kelly's class will be bringing home an update to the Reader Rock Garden Field Trip form, the incorrect date was on the form. Please initial and return the update. Thank you. On Friday June 22 we will say farewell to our Grade 4 students at the last Peace Assembly. The Peace Ambassadors and Eco Club will be presenting at the Assembly. Following the Assembly Grade 4's will be invited to stay in the gym to join for cupcakes. Parents are invited to attend. The Peace Assembly will be from 10:30 - 11:15. We are still looking for volunteers for Reader Rock Garden for Mr. Kelly's class on June 20. We require at least three more volunteers for this trip to be possible! Please email Pam Chamberlain if you are available to come. [email protected]
In the afternoon Mr. Kelly showed us how to create a drawing of a Monkey. Then we completed a round of Daily 5. Please note: Library books must be returned.
In Math we completed our final days for our Gain and Drain Project using the strategy for addition and subtraction that worked best for us. In inquiry we clarified and asked questions about our Simple Machine challenge, then we had some time to work with our team on our design. June 26 is Sports Day and we need volunteers to help out. Last year was a huge success because of the volunteer turnout. Hopefully we can repeat that success and make it even more of a success this year. Please check out the School Council Sign Up Genius to volunteer. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d44afab28abf94-sports1 Important: Please note that our policy at Eric Harvie School is no cell phones during school hours. We discussed the term 'revision' and how it is a big part of any creative pursuit. This was followed by health. The grade 3's are exploring healthy eating and the Canada Food Guide. In math we discussed using visual aids and graphic organizers to help us clarify their math thinking. This included graph paper and rulers for number lines. We also discussed expended notation as an alternate method of subtracting. we continued to work on our GAIN and Drain project. We started planning our machine for our inquiry. The challenge: Move a rock 50 cm (vertical or horizontal) by using simple machines. The students are very excited about this project.
