Today Ms. Belliveau shared with us about the layers of the earth and we "unpacked" all the layers. We worked around of Daily 5 and then practiced our 3, 2, 1, Edit and Revise strategy on a piece of our own writing. This strategy helps us to make sure our writing is clear and interesting.
In the afternoon we learned a new math addition game for math by myself practice. We then spent the remainder of the afternoon completing our waste awareness projects. We are looking forward to raising awareness of the environmental problems our earth faces and our ideas to make a difference. Tomorrow and Friday are Parent Teacher Conferences, we look forward to meeting with families. Reminder that student work will be in the hallways to look at together as a family before your time. Book orders are due tomorrow! Jungle Book!!! I have posted two new exciting posts. The first one has all of the songs in the entire show for you to practice. It is so important that you continue to practice at home so that you know it very well. The second post is a video of the entire musical including the scenes. If your interested in hearing the whole show you can find it here. Please click this link below and save it so that you can practice when ever you have time. http://ehsmusic1.weebly.com/jungle-book Thank you Mrs. Coulson

We had another action packed day in the classroom today! We started the day off with Miss Belliveau asking us again to think about our own identity and the identity of Alberta. We focused on how much of our identity is influenced by the province we live in and if there are any activities we love to do that are made possible because of our province. We also started to talk about the importance of Oil & Gas to Alberta and how it is that oil came to be trapped underneath the land in the layers of rocks.
We finished playing our verb and adverb dice game today, we had lots of fun acting out the actions on the dice. We will now all be on the hunt looking for action verbs and adverbs in the books we read! Our morning ended after the usual Tuesday gym and music routine. After lunch we learned a new addition strategy in math to add to our math notebooks. The strategy is using expanded notation when we are adding together large numbers that are 2 or more digits long. We will keep adding to our addition strategies to help us with our future math problems that we encounter! In our afternoon inquiry time we were given more time to work on our Science Waste in Our World Projects. They are really coming along beautifully! Mrs. Bates went over the criteria for our projects again today so as we finish up our projects it will be really important to make sure we have all of the pieces we need for these projects. We are hoping to be all done these projects by the end of the day tomorrow! Question of the Day: Which of the three rock types do we most commonly find oil in? (Hint: the three rock types are: Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous) Today we had a wonderful Monday as we kicked off our last week before spring break!
Our first lesson of the morning focused on the question of identity, we looked at our own identity and how it is shaped by where we live (Alberta!). We also looked at what Alberta's identity would be and some of the things that makes our province unique. We will continue to explore this tomorrow. Question of the Day: In class today Miss Belliveau asked if any of us had parents or family members who worked in the Oil & Gas Industry. Could you ask your parents this tonight and see what their response is? After finishing up a Daily 5 session in the morning we moved into an editing strategy lesson by Mrs. Zwack - we even got to edit one of Mrs. Zwack's personally written paragraphs! We will be looking for ways to apply our editing check list to our own writing in the future. After lunch and a mindfulness activity we began our afternoon with a writing workshop. Here we started to think about how authors make writing interesting for their readers and how to use good descriptive words to help paint a picture in our reader's minds. We learned about using adverbs to help describe our movement or action verbs and will get to play a game with verbs and adverbs tomorrow! In Math we are continuing to learn addition strategies that we can use to add up energy point totals in some of the common foods we eat. Also, we noticed many green snacks today and were very impressed as we continue to follow our food rainbows for nutrition month! We have been talking about nutrition a lot in math to help us with our addition strategies. To finish the afternoon we were given some time to work on our Science Inquiry Projects - they're really starting to come together and we can't wait to see the final products! Today was an assembly day! We enjoyed seeing all the learning that Ms. Scott and Ms. Dunmire's classes have done.
We worked on our inquiry projects. Some of us were working on our waste posters and plans. Others went to the maker space to work on their projects. They are coming along quite well and we anticipate being complete next week. When we first arrived at school we did a personal clean up. Our literacy bins are spotless and organized. Mrs. Coulson joined us and we did math practice. Then we all did read to self and practiced predicting and confirming. Important Notice: Dear Parents, Our interviews are approaching and online sign up will begin this Saturday. We look forward to meeting with each family and celebrating accomplishments and setting new learning targets! Mr. Kelly's families will meet with Ms. Shepherd and Ms. Belliveau. Mrs. Zwack and Mrs. Bates families will meet with both of us. Please book under your teacher's name only. We would like you to ensure that you are not booked immediately before your scheduled interview time with us. If you have several children in the school, Please leave the 15 minutes ahead of your time with us free so that you can spend time in the space outside our classroom to share student work and to engage in a few activities. We find this helpful before we meet to discuss their progress! We believe that the conference time is very important and that the student should be a part of the process and discussion. If at all possible, we would like your child to be there!! We look forward to meeting with you next week! Mrs. Bates, Mrs, Zwack, Mr. Kelly, Ms. Shepherd, and Ms. Belliveau This morning Mrs. Belliveau worked with the students to continue examining rocks. Observations were recorded in visual journals.
In Daily 5 students worked on writing, words and reading. Some students read with their teachers to update their reading assessment. In the afternoon students examined their nutritious snacks and added up energy points. They worked as teams to add energy points from the snacks using base ten blocks. The day wrapped up working on our waste projects in the classroom and makerspace. March is Nutrition Month This year dietitians will help Canadians Unlock the Potential of Food by highlighting how food not only nourishes, but also fuels active lives, inspires children, helps to heal, prevents chronic diseases – and most importantly – brings people together. At Eric Harvie School we are going to eat the rainbow during March. Children are challenged to bring snack each day that corresponds with the colors of the rainbow. - Wednesday March 14: red - Thursday March 15: orange - Friday March 16: yellow - Monday March 19: green - Tuesday March 20: blue - Wednesday March 21: indigo/violet Good food has its own package. Our morning inquiry lesson began with talking about rocks! Ms. Belliveau was very excited to talk about this as she studied Geology in school, so we all were able to act as geologists this morning by making observations of the rock samples that were placed all around our room, we will get to continue this tomorrow!
After our introduction to what could be under the ground in Alberta we switched to a new reading strategy we are learning in Daily 5. We practiced predicting what will happen next in the books we are reading and how to confirm our predictions. We would like to keep working on this strategy in the next book club time. We finished off our morning with gym time and music before heading to lunch. In our afternoon we weighed different objects in the classroom in either kilograms or grams. We talked about the relationship between these two units of measurements and when it is better to use kilograms or grams. Question of the Day: How many grams are in a kilogram? Talk about this with your parents or families tonight to see if they know too! After our math lesson we moved into our Science lesson. This lesson we looked at our 3 soil samples that have been hanging out in our classroom. We made some observations of these soil samples a while ago and were able to see if any of the soils have changed. We also made predictions about what will happen to the different soil samples in the future. First day back after the big time jump ahead and we all survived! This morning Miss Bell taught our class a new reading strategy where we learned to predict and confirm our predictions. We watch the video below and stopped at several points to make predictions in our thoughtful logs. The, we watched a bit more to see if our predictions were confirmed or not. This was a fun way to practice the strategy together. Later, we had an opportunity to practice with reading during our Book Club time. We are working toward building greater INDEPENDENCE as learners, especially as we head into spring break and the final part of this year. Our grade 4's will soon be moving on to grade 5 and our grade 3's will be our class leaders as grade 4's next year. You will hear a lot about building independence over the coming months as we prepare our students for these transitions. Today, we started a new Daily 5 tracking sheet where students will choose their D5 activity choices. The goal is to choose a balance of activities from Read to self, Read to Someone, Wrk on wRiting and word Work. Book Club times are scheduled 3 times per week. This is our trial week to see how we do and then we will revisit the tracking sheet. This afternoon we practiced math skills through games while some students had their green screen photos taken for our Alberta writing pieces. Mrs. Bates/Mrs. Zwack's class had music while Mr. Kelly's class had book club. After our outside break we worked on graphing our waste data using grid paper and focusing on labeling our axes appropriately. We finished the day working on our waste projects. Tomorrow, Tuesday March 13th will be the first full cast run-through of the Jungle Book. Your student is involved in this only if they have been cast in a role and has brought home a company contract. Rehearsal will run from 3:00-4:00. Your student will be dismissed at 4:00 p.m. Through the front doors of the school. They must let a teacher know that they see their parent or caregiver before running off so that we can ensure everyone has gone home to the correct place. If you are unsure if your child needs to be here for this rehearsal please email Mrs. Coulson at [email protected].

This morning we practiced our fluency and expression in reading our landform writing outloud with a partner. Some of the students had their first chance to explore the green screen and travel to the different landforms of Alberta from the comfort of the classroom. It was neat to see the beautiful pictures and think about how we might pose to look as though we were in these locations.
In wonder time we reflected on what we learned, what we liked and what we might want to wonder about next. Some of us completed a words their way check in and others worked on gathering their plans for their waste projects. Students that did not have their words their way check in today will have it on Monday. Reminder: Students in the Jungle Book cast were given a contract to take home today. Check backpacks. This morning we started out with an exciting pitch from Mrs. Zwack about an upcoming project she has in mind for us! We are going to take all of the learning and writing that we have done so far surrounding the topic of landforms in Alberta and use this information to make a video! This required us to use the iPads this morning to practice ourselves reading our scripts. We are all excited to see how this project will turn out!
After practicing with the iPads we re-visited our new Daily 5 strategy: How do we know what we know? This lesson connected all of our earlier reading lessons this week about looking for clues in the books we read to infer more about the characters and story lines in our books (specifically when we think about certain character traits that our characters have!). We had another combined gym class today (yay!) where we played many games of tag and ran around a lot prior to book club and lunch time! In the afternoon we began by revisiting our science writing plans that we are writing to state important reasons why we should car about the environment, especially in regards to water conservation, the 3 R's and composting. In math we continued our graphing lesson and continued to explore new ways to represent the data we collected last week with the amount of garbage we had in our classroom for the week. We finished the day by watching a Bill Nye science video that helped us get even more research for our science projects!
This afternoon we engaged in a pre-assessment for addition and subtraction. This data will help guide our next math project so we can learn what we need to about adding and subtracting by 3 & 4 digit numbers. We enjoyed an outside break in the warming weather. Then we had time to continue our plans for our environmental problems. Check out these blueprints of ways to clean pollution from water! We hope to see families tomorrow night at the Eric Harvie School Math Night.
