We had another wonderful day. Thats like 23 days in a row! The first thing we did this morning was: a map of our clay journey. After that we started our comic strip of friendship fires. We are practicing how to write dialogue. The speech bubbles in comic strips are exactly like quotation marks Mrs. Zwack read Seven Sacred Teachings this morning she did a great job! We had gym and Book Club. In the afternoon, Ewa came to our class again and we made beads from clay we made fro our soil samples from the coulee. Another example of how our earth provides for us. REMINDERS: The grade fours are going swimming tomorrow for their farewell celebration. So don't forget your trunks. Come dressed in your swim trunks on. Don't forget towels and undergarments. We will be going to Glenbow Ranch Tuesday June 5. Forms will come home tomorrow. We need a number of volunteers for this trip. This morning students began the day working on their Rock Wall art. Then we were challenged to use our mathematical skills to create a zoo space that will hold the most animals. Students had to show their work and explain their thinking.
Next we headed off to Gym & Music. This afternoon we finished up our Rock Wall art and then walked to TMC. At TMC we were treated to a special performance by the grade bands as well as the show band. It was a great opportunity to visit TMC again. It was a busy day today and we were happy to have Miss. B. in subbing for Mrs. Bates. It is so exciting to have her back in our class. We started the day watching a few videos (with some technical difficulties) to build understanding before our clay workshop on Wednesday afternoon. We have included one below. What connections were you able to make to our soil collection and separation? Next we moved on to Daily 5 and some more students read with Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Zwack.
WE started a new Read Aloud book today called The Seven Sacred Teachings. This book explains the view of many aboriginal people. Today we learned about the importance of HUMILITY as lesson #1. Humility is represented by the wolf because he does not put himself above the pack members. What else do you remember from this lesson today? After read aloud and snack, we alternated our classes through gym and Book Club. We are reading with a purpose this week to look for how author's include dialogue to make their story more interesting. We are gathering a list of other words for SAID and we have discovered so many!!! Our next steps will be to apply this learning to our own stories. After lunch we worked on Math and did some investigations into kitchen tools that are actually simple machines. Please Remember: Tomorrow we will be walking to TMC for a band presentation at 1:30. Volunteer tea - tomorrow morning at 10:00 am We had a wonderful day. The sun was bright and our students were brighter! As part of the provocation for our inquiry around simple machines, we walked to the barrier sandstone wall near the pond. Along the way we stopped to check in with our surroundings by focusing on what we heard, felt, and tasted. Upon reaching the retaining wall, students were challenged to see the wall and look or patterns and/or familiar shapes. We all found a spot and discussed the importance of getting into the green zone prior to continuing on a visual representation of the wall.
LOOK FOR VALUES (LIGHT, MEDIUM, DARK) LOOK FOR FAMILIAR SHAPES LOOK FOR PATTERNS ARE THE STONES STACK ON TOP OF EACH OTHER OR THEY STAGGERED? There were reminders to see art as a process and not to fixate on perfection. All self-talk was tempered with ISH statements. Some observations share were: The rocks look “retanglish” The rocks are “squarish” The rocks are “rectangular prismish” The rocks are “trapezoidish” Reminder: Summer weather is upon us and it is the time of year when we all enjoy the wonderful temperatures. Parents please be mindful about the footwear you send your child to school with. We continue to have daily gym periods and will be spending more time outside so appropriate footwear is still required in order for students to safely participate in all PE activities. We started the day by working on our visual journals and representing our learning from the trips. Our students are sharing so much learning and making so many connections!! Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Zwack were also working on reading with individual students to see how they have grown as readers. We re-read the book Lesson;s From Mother Earth as our read aloud today. We had read it once before but have learned so much since that time about aboriginal ways of connecting to the land. In book club today, we started some work on recognizing dialogue in our reading books and looking toward applying dialogue in our upcoming story writing project. Tomorrow we will carry on with this work as we make some comic strips with speech bubbles! This afternoon we explored subtraction through a fun activity. We added some rules for subtraction to our math journals. Mrs. Coulson came to see us for a special music class and we enjoyed an outside break. In Inquiry we explored some kitchen items closely. We were asked to think about what the tool was and what its function was. This exploration will continue next week. We have decided to take a quick community walk tomorrow morning (weather permitting) to look at the rock wall down the street. Students: please come dressed for the weather and bring sunscreen if needed. We will be outside for about half the morning. What an amazing two days of exploration, learning and experiences we have had. Yesterday's trip to Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump was fabulous. It was a long bus ride but students travelled wonderfully and took in many sights of Alberta landscapes. Upon arriving at Head Smashed in we were surprised to see that the building was built right into the hill so not to interrupt the land. We learned many things about way of life and the importance of the Buffalo. Students had great questions and were given the chance to learn through our own special tour guides. This morning we continued our learning of the Aboriginal Peoples at Niitsitapi Learning Centre. We explored and toured the school and looked at special belongings. We learned to call them belongings and not artifacts as they all have energy and belong to Na'a (Mother Earth) as well many were also made by people who are still living. The term belonging shares that they have energy and energy never disappears. We also learned the importance of circles and observed a Smudging Ceremony, some of us participating. Outside we were taught three games. 2 were from the Blackfoot - Run and Scream, and Football toss. 1 was from the Cree and was called Moose Bone. When we returned to school we had a late lunch, outside break and then spent some time reflecting on our learning over the past few days. Students were asked to think about things they noticed, things they wondered, connections they made and surprises. Important Information:
Our lost and found is over flowing; we would love to see hoodies, sweaters and scarves returned to their rightful owners. Lost and found items have been displayed in the school several times this year, and will be ready for viewing again during the volunteer tea. Please stop by to claim any missing favourites. Unclaimed items will be donated on June 1st. 2018 Glazed 8 – Sunday, June 10th A family event for all ages... supporting the Eric Harvie Physical Education department & Kidsport. The basics: Run. In Gym we played freeze tag and a ball tag game. These took place outside. We also had book club.
This afternoon was the final matinee performance of the Jungle Book. Many of our students were out performing. Those who were not in the main cast were treated for all their hard work the past 2 weeks with a video. Important Information Below: Main cast members perform for the last time tonight. Parents please pick them up at the teacher parking lot doors at 7:30 pm. We would like to clarify a few bits of information for next week as tomorrow is a PD Day and Monday is a holiday. Tuesday we will be leaving for Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump promptly at 8:15 am and need all students here at 8:00. We cannot wait for late students so if your child is not here on time, they will spend the day with a grade 1/2 class. We will not be back at the school until approximately 5:00 pm. Please be at the school between 4:30 and 5:00 for pick up as we cannot firmly predict our actual arrival time. We have enough volunteers for the day and all volunteers will need to drive or carpool as there is no extra room on the buses. Students will need lunch and snacks to last the whole day as well as a refillable water bottle. We will spend time outside so please dress for the weather - hat, sunscreen, jacket etc. Do not send any electronic devices or money. There will be a video on the bus. Students are welcome to bring a light weight book to read on the bus if they would like and some drawing materials. We also sent home another set of field trip forms today that will need to be returned on Tuesday. We will be going to Niitsitapi - the Aboriginal Learning Center on Wednesday morning to continue or Inquiry work. (The letter attached to the form has an error and says Tuesday May 23 - it should say Wednesday May 23). We apologize for the late notice on this one. Thank you for your support of our program and the trips we have coming up! We appreciate your help in providing these learning opportunities of your students! This morning we spent some time working on our Buffalo research. Our students that have been in the performance are catching up and we have one more day to add to ur visual journal pages before the big field trip on Tuesday. It is so exciting to be able to go and see the real thing and to connect that learning to what we already know. We then had a round of Daily 5 and Book Club. Hope joined our class this morning and she enjoyed her time with the students! Thank you to Mrs. Read for coming in to volunteer again today! She has been working on a special felting project with our students and we appreciate all of her time and special talents. This afternoon our students performed their matinee of the Jungle Book. Thank you to all the parents who joined us.
We look forward to sharing the performance this evening. Students are to return to school at 6pm. The performance begins at 6:30 (doors open to the audience at 6:15). Please return Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump forms, and Grade 4's return swimming forms. |
