There certainly was excitement in the air. The school was invaded by ghosts, vampires, Harry Potters, Super Heroes and monsters. Taking attendance was a challenge today. Question of the Day: What does area mean? We continued exploring nonfiction writing by challenging the students to identify areas of growth for their own writing. after reading the book, How A House Is Built by Gail Gibbons, Student were asked to look at their own writing and use the SAD format of How to writing. The students put a box around sequence words, a star next to action words and an underline to indicate a descriptive phrase. We will use this to establish a goal for our next writing task. We had a healthy snack and shared our novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. We had one round of Daily 5. Both classes had gym and music. we started to look at area in math today. .Reminders: Be safe tonight!

It was a very exciting day. It was awesome! We began by working on our How To stories and then…. And then… We had not one but two magicians visit us today. Brent the Magician (Mrs. Zwack’s friend from high school) and our very own London the Magnificent taught HOW TO DO MAGIC TRICKS!! London’s card trick involving ripping playing cards was mind-blowing. Challenge of the Day: Tell your parents about London the Magnificent card trick involving ripping cards went. We had a healthy snack break and read from The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. We finished our morning with an outside body break on our new playground. In the afternoon, we started with our Mindful Monday and then we discussed our next HOW TO challenge: How to get into the green zone at school! This was introduced by Mr. Kelly reading the book, How To Read A Story by Kate Messner/illustrated by Mark Siegel. In math we represented numbers using base ten blocks. We are trying to complete the initial photography for our own Ishi book project and we would like to ensure that all of our students participate. The following students have not brought in props for their Ishi photograph: Amrit Josh Ethan Emily R. Daroius Wesley Alex L. Qunzhi Zephrym Averie Abby Ashton Nayun Reminders: Tomorrow is Halloween. All students are invited to wear a costume and get into the spirit of the day. We are asking parents to be mindful of costume choices by ensuring there are no gory or bloody make up schemes, no weapons and no masks (for safety reasons). Students are encouraged to come dressed in their costumes. Mrs. Bowles is reminding all students to please hand in Terry Fox pledges and donations As Remembrance Day approaches, we are keeping Calgary's Veterans in our hearts. The 11th Annual Veterans Food Drive is underway. We ask the Eric Harvie Community to support our Veterans by bringing non-perishable food items to school to donate. Daily donations can be dropped off on the table in the Hub by the Learning Commons. Thank you, Mr. Der Please remember to send in your new or gently used winter wear for our Jacket Racket collection this week! The collection continues until Friday, November 3rd. Our Peace Ambassadors are busy collecting and organizing the generous donations that you have sent in so far! Challenge of the Day: Explain to your parents why the book your group looked at is a How To book? What evidence did you find in the book to support your thinking? (see photo of chart below) Thank you to all the students that read the blog last night and a special thank you to Ty and Sierra who were the only two students that read the blog Wednesday night. You Guys Rock! Miss. K., our guest teacher, was with us again. She said she had a wonderful time in our classroom and would like to come back again. We had a very busy day. We broke up into our book study groups to determine if the book was a How to book. We spent some time finishing our own instructional writing. Then the teachers pretended to be aliens and follow the instructions to determine how clear the writers’ intentions were. All volunteer writers made corrections after presenting their work. Great work! We read from our novel, ate a healthy snack and went outside for a body break. After returning, we had an assembly. Reminders: Halloween is next Tuesday. Costumes are welcome. We will provide more details on Monday’s blog about expectations. Question of the Day: What is expanded notation? Can you show your parents an example? We completed our first How to writing sample. Tomorrow we are going to invite an alien from another planet (Mr. Kelly) to see how successful our first attempts at writing instructional text are. We looked at other examples of How to books and discussed the common structure of these books. We specifically focused on the writer’s intent. Mr. Kelly read How to Train a Train by Jason Carter Eaton. We did three rounds of Daily 5 and went to gym. Miss. K., our guest teacher, read from our novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Katie DiCamillo. In the afternoon students were challenged to represent a chosen number as many different ways as they could. Some students expressed their number in written form, expanded form, addition/multiplication sentences and illustrations (drawings of place value blocks). A few students expressed their number in term lesser than/greater than. We had a practice fire drill (always a dramatic moment at Eric Harvie). We finished the day with a outdoor body break and art. This morning we looked at the structure of How To Do instructional text. We discovered that all How to Do books have a purpose and a structure. We began by sharing the book, Everyone Can Ride a Bicycle by Chris Raschka. While reading, students were asked to be mindful of the language used in this whimsical instructional manual. Students identified the author's intention and how he used ordered steps or directions. We also generated a list of sequence words; Questions of the day: What is the purpose of instructional or How to Do Books? What is the structure of instructional or How to Do Books? This was followed by a challenge of teaching aliens form outer space how to perform a simple human task. Some of these tasks included: -brushing teeth -making coffee or tea -tying shoelaces -drawing -walking This afternoon we looked at our "How to" plans from the morning and began to write an Instructional Text. We were challenged to read our writing to make sure that someone new to the topic would understand our instructions. In Math we practiced representing numbers between 0-5000. Some of the ways we discussed representing numbers were: number words, pictures, place value, number lines, base ten blocks and expanded notation. We had some time at the end of the day to finish up some of our unfinished work, while some students worked with Mr. Kelly on their ISHI pictures. We would like to finish up the ISHI pictures this week. Students that have not brought in their props must do so by the end of the week. Note about Halloween: There is a lot going on at our school at the end of October this year! The School Council's Special Event BRICKS 4 KIDZ is taking place on Thursday, October 26, 5:30 - 8:00 pm, and our Playground Grand Opening Celebration, also sponsored by the School Council, is happening on Friday, October 27, beginning at 2:00 pm. Halloween occurs on Tuesday, October 31 and we are going to try and honour the fun of the celebration while keeping things a bit low key since we are so busy already! Students are invited to wear their costumes all day on Tuesday if they choose, with a couple of restrictions - no masks or weapons, please, and we would ask that face paint be kept to a minimum during the school day so it does not interfere with the children's learning. There will be no whole school event to recognize Halloween as we are certain children will be looking forward to engaging with their families in all the trick or treating events that evening. Classrooms will include some Halloween-themed activities through the day as the teachers and students feel appropriate to their classroom. The fun and excitement of Halloween is something the school is happy to celebrate and share with our students in the context of learning and building peaceful communities together. Looks like next week might be just a little calmer than this week as we say good-bye to October and acknowledge another celebration of costumes, fun and trick-or-treating! Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s): Please see important playground information effective today, October 25, 2017.
Lorraine Kinsman, Principal Wendy Campbell, Assistant Principal "Building Peaceful Communities Together" Most of morning was spent exploring nonfiction writing. The first activity was to take a personal survey that will serve as an organizer for a How to Be Me story. We then took up the work we started yesterday by comparing nonfiction books with fiction books. Students are challenged to identify characteristics of nonfiction writing to better prepare for our own nonfiction writing. Two rounds of Daily 5 followed this. Before both classes left for music and gym, we had a healthy snack and shared our novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate Ci The afternoon began with a writing challenge. Students were given photograph prompts from last week’s visit to Glenbow Ranch. Students were then invited to write about their days. We played math games and continued working on our Ishi Rock book project. We also read the book, How to be a Cat by Nikki McClure. This book is an example of a How to book (nonfiction text). Students we asked to pay attention to the structure and the text. Some observations made were about the simple text were: The book is full of action words The words are very descriptive. The words tell you how to be a cat. The words are instructions. Reminders: Book Truck comes tomorrow Grand opening of our new playground is this Friday, October 27 Family Fun Night
