This was a busy and exciting Thursday!
We started our day by continuing creating our Make it Merry cards. Our messages are focusing on empathy and caring. The cards are getting picked up tomorrow, so we will finish them up in the morning! In math, we are continuing to work on perimeter and area. We started to develop a formula for figuring out area ... but shhh, it's a secret! We are leading up to an exciting area project with Miss Bell next week. Lastly, we are going on our Coulee walk tomorrow!! Please remember to come dressed for the weather. It's always colder than it seems!

This morning we continued our Make it Merry project, we were lead through a very reflective and imaginative activity with Mrs. Zwack. This activity had us thinking about what it would be like to be homeless on Christmas Day. With our Make it Merry project we will each be creating cards
Explain to your parent what strategy did you use to find the perimeter of your area rug. This morning we finished reading our book, 'The Can Man' and continued our activity from yesterday with the envelope, money and purchasing needs versus wants. Today we focused on how we could work together as a class to ensure all students were able to meet all of their needs. We had wonderful discussions surrounding this topic which will help us when we continue our Make it Merry project later this week. We started our afternoon with an activity to help us brainstorm descriptive words for when we write our own descriptive writing pieces. We broke out into different career groups and had to think like our profession to come up with ideas for topics, sub-topics and detail words. There were many wonderful ideas from our Artists, Scientists, Designers, Explorers and many more groups! Miss Belliveau would like to encourage everyone to keep thinking about triple scoop words to use for our descriptive writing! We finished the day off with looking a a variety of strategies to calculate the perimeters of our area rugs. Question of the Day: Can you explain to your parents about the strategies you used to find the perimeter of your area rug? We will be going on a Coulee Walk on Friday morning Parent/Teacher Interviews next week There is a mistake on the Nov 27 Updated. The Christmas Choir will be performing on Thursday, November 14th. This morning we began an activity that is related to our 'Make it Merry' project, we will be exploring this project all week. Our activity was that students received an envelope of (fake!) money to buy different objects being sold in the classroom - some of these objects were needs and some of them were wants. At the end of the activity we discussed what it was like to have a lot of money and be able to afford all things and also what it was like to be unable to afford any of the items. We will continue thinking about this activity tomorrow. We started to read the book "The Can Man' by author Laura E. Williams which ties in perfectly with our lesson and our Make it Merry project, we will finish this book tomorrow. Question for the day: Can you describe the activity we did today in class to your family this evening and come up with an idea about how to ensure the whole class can meet their needs next time? In the afternoon we worked on our math area rug project and began to calculate the perimeter and area for our rugs that we designed. We also continued our descriptive writing unit and we were asked to think about using triple scoop words when we add details to our future descriptive writing pieces. We will be going on a Coulee Walk on Friday morning. Attention choir students! Here is the link for the choir blog! Please practice your music as much as you can. Our performance is coming up very soon and it is so important that you know your words!!
http://ehsmusic1.weebly.com/choir We went to the zoo today!
Please bring cardboard and/or other miscellaneous items for the Beaker Head Challenge tomorrow! THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY! We are taking on a Beaker Head challenge. Students are encouraged to bring cardboard and other items that will help them design a device, tool, a machine... anything that will improve our quality of life. Students will meeting in multi-aged groups to create a new or improve on existing device. The project is one day only project. The student teachers have been leading our descriptive writing lessons, today we got into groups to pick out topics and subtopics of descriptive writing books that the students chose. We will think about descriptive writing when we go to the Calgary Zoo tomorrow and this might help us when it is time to choose our own topics for our individual descriptive writing articles. In Daily 5 we continue exploring reading strategies. Today we talked about the cross check strategy. Challenge: Students, explain to your parents what a cross check strategy looks like. During this time, we also continued choosing books for our book clubs. In small groups, students are deciding, together, what book they will read. In the afternoon, we engaged in a math activity called Lattice math. This game assists learners to develop strategies for multiplication, addition and place value. In science we prepped for our field trip to the zoo tomorrow by preparing field journals. Tomorrow, we are going to the zoo. Please dress for the weather. It is supposed to nice (12C) but keep in mind we will be outside for a large part of the day. It will be cool in the morning, please layer. We started our day off by boarding the bus for our field trip to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO)! We had a wonderful morning listening to beautiful symphonies that were composed by French, Italian, English and Canadian musicians. There were many different instruments in the orchestra including flutes, tubas, clarinets, violins, drums and many more! The conductor even had the different sections of instruments play a section of a song individually so we could hear what the different pieces of music sounded like before they were all played together. We were really lucky to enjoy such a lovely morning filled with such lovely music.
Due to the field trip we had a late lunch and a busy afternoon fitting in all of our activities, this included outdoor time, learning a new math activity and drawing in our art books. Mrs. Zwack was overjoyed today when she saw Nayun's beautiful Calgary Flames jersey today! Question of the day: Can you explain to your family tonight how plants effect our needs and wants in everyday life? Reminder: We have our field trip to the Calgary Zoo on Thursday! We had an exciting start to our week! Our morning began by finishing Edward Tulane and starting the last page in our books. After that, we jumped into learning a new reading strategy: cross-checking! (Does the word look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?).
While half the class was in phys.ed and music, the other class began their book clubs. In our groups, we are starting to explore different book options. We are thinking about what interests us and what is good for our level! After lunch, Miss Kurila and Miss Bell continued exploring descriptive writing in the class. We broke off into groups to do some detective work and make webs on different descriptive books. (What is the main topic? What are the subtopics?). Next, we learned some new "math by myself" tasks for place value. Miss Kurila showed the class a "Building Numbers" activity to explore expanded form of numbers, and Miss Bell showed the class a "Magic Numbers" activity that explored a new way to do multiplication! Finally, in science, we found ourselves stranded on an island! Oh no! We thought about what we would need to survive, starting with our top 8 needs, then narrowing it down to our top 4 needs. Reminder that we are going on our CPO field trip tomorrow morning, followed by our zoo field trip on Thursday! Question of the day: If you were stranded on an island, what are the top 4 things you would need? Can you rank them? This Friday the whole school will be engaged in the Beakerhead Ingenuity Challenge. This year’s material is cardboard - if you have any cardboard that we can use for projects on this Friday, Nov. 24 please send them in with your child throughout this week. All materials brought in will be shared amongst the students. Thank you! Challenge of the Day: Students explain to your parents what the items were that Mrs. Bates had in the classroom. It was a wonderfully calm morning in room 179/1780 this morning. As part of our Daily 5 routine we explored Words Their Way. The grade fours led the grade threes in blind sort. We completed another two rounds of Daily 5. Read for our novel. We are almost done. In the afternoon, we continued with elements of art with Zen doodles. Explored place vale and perimeter in math. We then went outside for a body break. When we got back inside students were invited to explore a large puzzle in science. Reminders: We have two field trips next week Make sure both permission forms have returned to school Field Trip 1 is on Tuesday, November 21 to see the CPO Field Trip 2 is on Thursday, November 23 to the Calgary Zoo We are still looking for two more parent volunteers |
