Weekend Challenge: Find a time during your busy weekend to pause, close your eyes and listen to your brain and body. Ask yourself: How does your brain and body feel right now? As a school we recognized Orange Shirt Day. Many students were proudly wearing their orange in recognition that all life matters. Mrs. Bowles led an assembly that spoke to the need of acknowledging this day. We also discussed residential schools within the frame of child rights. She shared the book, When I was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton & Margret Pokiak-Fenton Illustrations by: Gabrielle Grimard. We continued working on our Heart Maps, took a body break, ate a snack and shared the book, In My Heart by Jo Witek/illustrated by Christine Roussey. Why do we recognize Orange Shirt Day? What is the story behind Orange Shirt Day? We started our day with a discussion around author intentions. What did Nicola Campbell want us to know after reading her book, Shin-chi’s Canoe.
Mason We had gym outside. In the afternoon, we completed our Robot (Number Line) journal responses. Students were challenged to find patterns in place value and odd/even. We read For Every Child (Unicef the rights of child in word and pictures). Students were asked to make connections to Shi-Chi’s Canoe. Then we worked on our Name Heart Maps. . Reminders: -Early dismissal Friday -Three Left Feet performance: Thursday, October 12, 1:45-2:35 pm (Zwack/Bates) Friday, October 13, 10:00-10:55 am (Kelly) -Book orders went home today, October 2, 2017 -Orange Shirt Day, this Friday, September 29 -We start our class novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane on Monday Why are names important? Today we discussed the importance of our names. We continued to detail our personal connections to our names through heart maps. Students are creating their own heart map to portray the importance of their name. Here are some of our reflections as to why names are important: Abby – names represent who you are Beth – my parents gave me the name I have and I like the name Mason – you name is important because most of the time your parents put a lot of thinking into your name Kaely – names are important because they result in how you become as a person Darius – our names are important because when people need to talk to us they refer to our name Ethan – names are important so that we know who is who, you have to identify them by more than their face Elyse – Names are important as they tell who you are The connection to the importance of names and self was further explored this afternoon as we read the story "Shin-chi's Canoe" by Nicola I. Campbell. We began to discuss the history of Residential Schools in Canada and how it must have felt for children to be taken from their homes and given new names. This will lead us to the importance of Orange Shirt Day which is occurring on Friday.
Both classes attended Gym. In daily five we practiced a comprehension strategy - check for understanding. After read to self students shared with a partner. Mr. Kelly's class explored the differences between Modern and Classical Art while Mrs. Bates & Mrs. Zwack's class was in Three Left Feet. In Math we worked on looking for patterns in a number line through Robots that move by 2, 3, 4 and 5. Important notes: -Friday is Orange Shirt Day -Book Orders are due Monday Oct 2 What does EMPATHY mean? We started our day with discussing the above question and how it is connected to the book, My Name Is Yoon by Helen Recorvits. It was the story that we read yesterday. The students were challenged to put themselves in the Yoon’s shoes to see if they could make a connection to how she may feel being in a strange country far away from home. We then wrote a journal response about our feelings. Students were asked to remember a time in their own lives when they were a new comer. We then choose to either read-to-self or read-to-someone during our Daily 5 time. We have built up our reading stamina to 20 minutes! Both classes had gym and music today. Check out the music blog!! We began our afternoon by experimenting with wavy lines as we continue to look at the elements of art. This was followed by math. A number line activity involving skip counting. Mr. Kelly’s group spent some time with the dance troop, Three Left Feet. In observerence of Orange Shirt Day (and continuing our theme of empathy) this Friday we began looking at the residential school experience of Canada’s First Nation People. We will share the book, Shin-chi’s Canoe by Nicola Campbell/illustrated by Kim La Fave tomorrow. We started a Heart Map that will illustrate the importance of our name and identify, themes that are brought up in the Shin-Chi’s Canoe. Reminders: -Early dismissal Friday -Three Left Feet performance: Thursday, October 12, 1:45-2:35 pm (Zwack/Bates) Friday, October 13, 10:00-10:55 am (Kelly) -Book orders went home today, October 2, 2017 -Orange Shirt Day, this Friday, September 29 -Book Truck comes tomorrow -We start our class novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane on Monday Question of the Day: Is a thermometer a number line? Thank you to all the parents who attended the open house on Thursday. It was nice to see you all (again). We started our day with Daily 5. The students got to choose an activity form a list of 4 items (read-to-self, read-to-someone, word work or book exchange) for the first time. We then discussed what went well during this time and area were we, as a group, can improve. Some things we did well during Daily 5: *We sat close to our partners *After exchanging books Mason found a spot and read-to-self without being asked to *Kaely found a just right book *Ashton said his partners was a very good reading coach We had a body break and snack and shared the book, My Name Is Yoon by Helen Recorvits/illustrated by Gabi Swiatkowski. We talked about being a new student in a new country. What is it like to be in someone else’s shoes? Yoon's name means "shining wisdom," and when she writes it in Korean, it looks happy, like dancing figures. But her father tells her that she must learn to write it in English. In English, all the lines and circles stand alone, which is just how Yoon feels in the United States… Amazon Books We went outside for gym and played soccer games. We are going to start our class novel soon. It is called, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. The afternoon was very busy. Three Left Feet Dance troop started their residency today. They will be teaching all of the students of Eric Harvie a dance routine. We also had our Peace Walk today. FRIDAY IS ORANGE SHIRT DAY! Friday is Orange Shirt Day! We, at Eric Harvie School, are committed to the principle that every child matters and will be wearing an orange shirt on Friday, September 29th. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission. This orange shirt taken from one child, is a symbol of the many losses experienced by thousands of students, and their families and communities, over several generations including: loss of family, language, culture, freedom, parenting, self-esteem and worth and painful experiences of abuse and neglect. Wearing an orange shirt and promoting the slogan, Every Child Matters, is an affirmation of our commitment to raise awareness of the residential school experience and to ensure that every child matters as we focus on our hope for a better future in which children are empowered to help each other through peace and understanding. There will be a short, age appropriate gathering with the students to highlight the symbolism of the orange shirt and the importance of care and understanding. We encourage students to wear their orange shirts on Friday, September 29th. Eric Harvie Staff Reminders: -Early dismissal Friday -Three Left Feet performance: Thursday, October 12, 1:45-2:35 pm (Zwack/Bates) Friday, October 13, 10:00-10:55 am (Kelly) -Book orders went home today, October 2, 2017 -Orange Shirt Day, this Friday, September 29 Question of the Day: What are the seven elements of art? We choose our affirmations today. This morning, we practiced read-to-someone for 17 whole minutes. Our goal was 14 minutes. Good job! Also, we had our first fire drill. Hema doesn’t like the sound of the alarm; she says it’s too loud. Our students were wonderful role models during this time. When we returned to the school, we had snack time and read from the book, Unstoppable Me. The book by Dr. Wayne Dryer illustrates the power of affirmations. We had our first Peace Assembly of the year. Mrs. Cox and Mr. Simmons’ classes presented a wonderful play based on the book, The Quilt Makers Gift by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail De Marcken. This was followed by a mini-art lesson on the elements of art. The focus of the lesson: LINE. We ended our day with printing our affirmations on our rocks and a class clean up. Reminders: *no school tomorrow- PD day Questions of the Day: What makes a good reading coach? What does read-to-someone look like? Today we started making are pinwheels for peace. They are looking awesome. We decided on a peaceful message and drew peaceful drawings like: peace signs, doves, rainbows, hearts, smiley faces and lots of color. After we coloured we cut them out. We did pinwheels for peace to spread peace around the world. As a school we work by the motto peace. We work and play peacefully all day long. Doing the pinwheels helps us grow are peaceful and exiting legacy. Charlotte, Anjali and Mason As part of our Daily 5 (literacy times) we discussed read-to-someone. Students demonstrated what reading to someone looks like. Part of reading to someone includes being a reading coach. Read to some and read to self will become important choices during Daily 5 times. In the afternoon we completed our pinwheels for Peace Project. We also worked in our math journals. Students are being challenged to choice an affirmation form the list below that best reflects their personality. The chosen affirmation will be written on their rocks. For safety, we are asking all families to please not use the Tuscany Way walkway entrance. We will be keeping all students off the hill and would ask parents to please walk students down Tuscany Drive to the steps where the children can access the school yard via the bottom of the hill until further notice. This is a major inconvenience but the good news is the playground is almost here!! |
