Please Note that ll This morning we worked on reviewing expectations and revising our Coulee Stories which have been in progress since last week. We are applying many of the skills and strategies we have learned in the past few months to a piece of fiction writing. We are working through the steps of planning and writing a setting description, introduction of characters and the story problem and a clear beginning, middle and end. We are learning that real writers receive feedback as they write their books and make revisions passed on this feedback. This is how we improve our waiting and create stories that will hold the reader's attention! Next the grade 4's stayed with Mrs. Zwack for their first HS lesson and the grade 3's worked on the beginning of a Nutrition and Canada Food Guide project in another room with Mr. Kelly. Grade 4's have a homework task to complete tonight with a parent and are to bring the signed tear off slip back to school tomorrow to indicate that they have completed the discussion. Field Trip forms are coming home for Reader Rock Garden this evening. Please note that Mr. Kelly and Mrs. zack and Bates classes go on different days. We are in need of volunteers so if you can help us out, please connect with Pam Chamberlain via her email. In the afternoon, we had a presentation for the Calgary Public Library about using the library over the summer months. Students talk to your parents about the presentation. In math we continued with our Gain and Drain activity. The we shared the simple machines we made on Thursday with each other. In small groups students will be challenged to build a complex machine., by using simple machines, to move a rock. More details to come. Please note that all library books are now due back n the Learning Commons!! Check at home and in backpacks!!!

We began the morning working on our Coulee stories. Students discussed their characters with a peer group and perfected their character descriptions.
We enjoyed a story called "My Name is Blessing" and then went outside for a movement break. In math we began looking at a whole day and planning out how we might gain energy points and drain energy points. After the Peace Assembly we started adding together energy points gained through Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks and Dinner. The Grade 1/2's presented a great Peace Assembly all about being thankful. Reminder: June 26 is Sports Day and we need volunteers to help out. Last year was a huge success because of the volunteer turnout. Hopefully we can repeat that success and make it even more of a success this year. Please check out the School Council Sign Up Genius to volunteer. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d44afab28abf94-sports1 Important: Parents: We are quickly developing a 'messy and dangerous scooter' situation inside the school. Unfortunately, we do not have any space anywhere to store scooters that are brought to school and are not locked up - we have had a few students leaving them just inside the front door, but the number is quickly growing and that situation has become unsafe with the scooter clutter making entry/exit for students and parents quite perilous. Therefore, we are going to align our expectations for scooter safety with both Tuscany and TMC policies and respectfully request that ALL SCOOTERS COMING TO SCHOOL MUST BE LOCKED UP ON THE BIKE RACKS. Here is a link we found with some ideas for locking up scooters. Beginning Monday, June 11/18, students will NOT be allowed to leave their scooters inside the school anywhere but must lock them up at the bike racks. https://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/topic/228207-how-to-lock-up-kids-scooter/ Thanks so much! Lorraine Kinsman, Principal What is the inquiry challenge for tomorrow?
Students, share with your parents. We started our day with Daily 5 and then we worked on our setting for oiur narrative writing. In the afternoon, we had Math Practice and the n worked on the Drain/Gain math assignment. After our afternoon body break, Charlotte thought it would be a good idea to clean out our literacy bins. Today we enjoyed a beautiful Spring day at Glenbow Ranch. Groups explored the Ranch in Multi Age groupings and observed lots of changes to the park since our Trip in the Fall. Thank you to the volunteers that joined us!
We started our day with a practice lock down. The students were very calm and quickly followed lock down protocol. Mrs. Zwack continued sharing the book, The Seven Scared Teachings. The Seven Sacred Teachings is a message of traditional values and hope for the future. The Teachings are universal to most First Nation peoples. These Teachings are aboriginal communities from coast to coast. They are a link that ties First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities together. After the lock down, we continued illustrating our Clay Journey. On Friday, we started our description for the settings for our narrative writing. The students are very excited about sharing their ideas. We continues with our simple machine inquiry. In small groups, students were challenged to search and provide photographic evidence of six simple machines in the school. We also reviewed subtraction with regrouping. REMINDERS: We are going to Glenbow Ranch tomorrow. We will be gone most of the day so, please, dress appropriately (i.e., proper footwear, hats, sunscreen, water, etc.). Consent forms must be signed and presented to teachers before the bus leaves. Buses leave at 9:00 am, parent volunteers will meet in the Harvie Room at 8;35am. Human Sexuality forms for grade four students went home today. We didn't go to the coulee this morning. The rain chased that idea away. So instead we used our photos from previous visits and the internet to take a virtual hike of the coulee. This time was used an inspiration for our setting for narrative story writing. We used our senses and made observations of what the coulee experience is like. We worked on our clay journey maps and took an outside body break. Mrs. Zwack shared the Seven Scared Teachings. We finished our paintings of the the retaining wall. They turned our wonderfully well. REMINDERS: We are going to visit the Glenbow Ranch, Tuesday, June 5. Please return consent forms ASAP. Ride your Bike to School Day, Tuesday, June 5. Hi All, Please post the following on your blogs: Bike to School Day: June 5, 2018 On June 5th, a huge group of schools and thousands of students, more than ever, will be biking to their schools- participating in Calgary Bike to School Day. The mission of this event is to promote healthy active lifestyles in youth and that it can also be fun to participate in. EHS students showed their active transportation last year. Let's do it again this year, but make it bigger. Hopefully Bike to School Day will be every day. It is a great way to be active and healthy. Check out this website for more information: http://calgarybiketoschool.weebly.com/ We had another wonderful day. Thats like 23 days in a row! The first thing we did this morning was: a map of our clay journey. After that we started our comic strip of friendship fires. We are practicing how to write dialogue. The speech bubbles in comic strips are exactly like quotation marks Mrs. Zwack read Seven Sacred Teachings this morning she did a great job! We had gym and Book Club. In the afternoon, Ewa came to our class again and we made beads from clay we made fro our soil samples from the coulee. Another example of how our earth provides for us. REMINDERS: The grade fours are going swimming tomorrow for their farewell celebration. So don't forget your trunks. Come dressed in your swim trunks on. Don't forget towels and undergarments. We will be going to Glenbow Ranch Tuesday June 5. Forms will come home tomorrow. We need a number of volunteers for this trip. If you can volunteer please sign up: Glenbow Ranch: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d44afab28abf94-glenbow1https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d44afab28abf94-glenbow1 This morning students began the day working on their Rock Wall art. Then we were challenged to use our mathematical skills to create a zoo space that will hold the most animals. Students had to show their work and explain their thinking.
Next we headed off to Gym & Music. This afternoon we finished up our Rock Wall art and then walked to TMC. At TMC we were treated to a special performance by the grade bands as well as the show band. It was a great opportunity to visit TMC again. It was a busy day today and we were happy to have Miss. B. in subbing for Mrs. Bates. It is so exciting to have her back in our class. We started the day watching a few videos (with some technical difficulties) to build understanding before our clay workshop on Wednesday afternoon. We have included one below. What connections were you able to make to our soil collection and separation? Next we moved on to Daily 5 and some more students read with Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Zwack.
WE started a new Read Aloud book today called The Seven Sacred Teachings. This book explains the view of many aboriginal people. Today we learned about the importance of HUMILITY as lesson #1. Humility is represented by the wolf because he does not put himself above the pack members. What else do you remember from this lesson today? After read aloud and snack, we alternated our classes through gym and Book Club. We are reading with a purpose this week to look for how author's include dialogue to make their story more interesting. We are gathering a list of other words for SAID and we have discovered so many!!! Our next steps will be to apply this learning to our own stories. After lunch we worked on Math and did some investigations into kitchen tools that are actually simple machines. Please Remember: Tomorrow we will be walking to TMC for a band presentation at 1:30. Volunteer tea - tomorrow morning at 10:00 am We had a wonderful day. The sun was bright and our students were brighter! As part of the provocation for our inquiry around simple machines, we walked to the barrier sandstone wall near the pond. Along the way we stopped to check in with our surroundings by focusing on what we heard, felt, and tasted. Upon reaching the retaining wall, students were challenged to see the wall and look or patterns and/or familiar shapes. We all found a spot and discussed the importance of getting into the green zone prior to continuing on a visual representation of the wall.
LOOK FOR VALUES (LIGHT, MEDIUM, DARK) LOOK FOR FAMILIAR SHAPES LOOK FOR PATTERNS ARE THE STONES STACK ON TOP OF EACH OTHER OR THEY STAGGERED? There were reminders to see art as a process and not to fixate on perfection. All self-talk was tempered with ISH statements. Some observations share were: The rocks look “retanglish” The rocks are “squarish” The rocks are “rectangular prismish” The rocks are “trapezoidish” Reminder: Summer weather is upon us and it is the time of year when we all enjoy the wonderful temperatures. Parents please be mindful about the footwear you send your child to school with. We continue to have daily gym periods and will be spending more time outside so appropriate footwear is still required in order for students to safely participate in all PE activities. |
