The Bow River watershedWe had our second presentation from CPAWS today and we learned about the Bow River watershed, the animals that face extinction from water pollution (whooping crane and Bull Trout), and how ground pollution travels into the Bow River. We took an oath as a water ranger - ask your child what he/she promised to do to help the environment. We also created an infographic page to summarize our learning. Updates...
Winter Sports Day - Wednesday February 14th Eric Harvie will be hosting our first ever Winter Sports Day. Sports Day will be Wednesday February 14th from 12:15-3:00 pm. Students will be participating in a variety of winter and Olympic activities for this special afternoon. Please ensure your child is dressed to be outside for the afternoon to participate in the fun. Eric Harvie families we need your help! Please help us by freezing water in 2L milk/juice containers that we can use to make ice sculptures for our afternoon. If you want to add color to your water before you freeze it, please feel free. We know the kids would love colored blocks! Please bring any 2L ice blocks to school with you on Wednesday February 14th and drop them off at the front of the school. Please help us by taking the ice block out of the milk/juice container before dropping it off at school. Please do not bring ice blocks prior to the 14th as we have no way to store the ice. Thank you for your help with this project! We are looking for volunteers to help run our sports day activities. Please use the sign up genius to sign up to help out. We appreciate all your help! Just click on 'yes' YES, I'D LIKE TO VOLUNTEER! Reading buddies...Students read to Kindergarten buddies this morning, and this afternoon, had the opportunity to read with 'big buddies' from TMC as part of our literacy week here at EHS.

What if...We looked at the water crisis currently going on in South Africa. We used 4L milk jugs to show what 87 L would look like (students had to figure out how many jugs it would be). Each resident in South Aftrica was limited to using 87 L of water a day. However, since February first that has been reduced to 50 L/day. What changes would we need to make in our daily lives if we were facing a water crisis? What changes could we make? Can we do more now to conserve as opposed to consume? What makes sense? We've been sharing strategies and thinking through how to solve word problems in mathematics. We are learning to recognize key words in math problems to help us understand which operation to use. We encourage students to show their thinking in words, pictures and numbers. Here is one to work on at home. You are playing an online game. In round 1 you score 257 points. In round 2 you score 130 points. In order to level up you need to earn a total of 500 points. How many points do you need to earn to get to the next level?
