Why are plants important? What would the coulee look like without them?Students were challenged with the question - why are plants important? They had the opportunity to imagine the coulee without plants. Students shared ideas and theories and went on to sketch a "plantless" coulee. They were then given different plants to sort and categorize then ended the lesson with time to brainstorm what they wonder about plants! "The Wild Robot" Gesture DrawingsToday we chose one pose from the tableaux we previously performed and did a gesture drawing of it. Then we briefly wrote about what the pose represents and how it is connected to the chapters we looked deeply at during our tableaux. Plant ExplorationThis morning we had the opportunity to take a closer look at some plants that were brought into our classroom. There were 10 different types of plants for us to explore. At each station we were able to use our senses to touch, smell, and see the plant. We had two tasks to complete at our first station, 1. we were asked to write something we noticed/knew about the plant on a sticky note and 2. we were asked to sketch a picture of the plant. We then had the opportunity to come together and look at some of the things we came up with on a sticky note. Afterwards we had some time to move through a few more stations and explore some different types of plants. We will continue our exploration and sketching of plants next week. Remembrance Day CeremonyWe observed Remembrance Day today with our friends and family. It was a beautiful ceremony. Updates...Remembrance Day Ceremony

What does one million look like? We worked to brainstorm our strategies to prove that there are one million stars in a photo. We then worked off a grid to assist our thinking.
We examined a quote from Albert Einstein. We thought deeply about what the quote meant to us and thought about questions it brought up. We then read a book (On A Beam of Light) about Albert Einstein and learned about the way he thinks. We were then challenged to be curious like Einstein and review our response to the quote and expand upon our thinking. | |
We learned about a form of expression today in the form of tableaux. We took that new knowledge to plan together scenes that would capture the stories told in individual chapters from "The Wild Robot". The tableaux followed certain criteria and students were encouraged to be expressive with their body language and facial expressions in order to convey meaning.
We played a game called higher or lower. We used base 10 blocks to show how much a number is. The students were adding and taking away to make a number.
We had such a great turn out for our student led learning walk last night. The students were excited and eager to share their writing with you. Our class worked on descriptive writing. We learned how to hook our reader and make our writing interesting and clear.
